Sherri Blank Lazear
Attorney Sherri Blank Lazear proves it is possible to maintain a busy professional life while also contributing to LASC as a volunteer. While at her former firm Baker Hostetler, Lazear was a partner in the litigation group, specializing in the areas of bankruptcy, construction, and real estate litigation. Now with Lazear Capital Partners, Ltd., she also serves as an adjunct professor for her alma mater, The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, and on several non-profit boards.
She first became involved with LASC as a Governing Board member of the YWCA Columbus, and currently plays an instrumental role as coordinator for the legal clinic established at the YWCA Family Center, an emergency shelter for homeless families. Through her volunteer work, Lazear assists homeless families by eliminating the legal barriers to finding jobs and housing, which she finds to be extremely rewarding.
One night after the clinic, she was approached by a woman she had just assisted who wanted to express her appreciation. The woman said she had been losing sleep due to the legal issue weighing on her, but that she would sleep well that night because Lazear had answered her questions and made her feel better about the situation. Lazear has also helped clients to gain back household items wrongfully held by landlords, expunge criminal records so they could obtain jobs to provide for their families, and apply for public benefits and the State Victims of Crime Fund.
Lazear assures attorneys that even with a busy practice, there are many evening opportunities for pro bono activities through one of the numerous legal clinics around central Ohio. “I would highly recommend serving as a pro bono attorney for LASC. You will be able to make a difference in people’s lives through your volunteer efforts. I would especially encourage law students and young lawyers to engage in pro bono activities. It is an excellent way to gain skills and networking opportunities in the legal community.”
LASC wishes to thank Lazear for the countless hours she has dedicated to the YWCA Family Center clinic.
