The Legal Aid Society of Columbus Seeks a Deputy Director

The Legal Aid Society of Columbus (LASC) provides civil legal services to low income individuals in six counties in Central Ohio (Delaware, Franklin, Madison, Marion, Morrow and Union).  This service area includes the state capital which is a vibrant and growing city, with sizeable immigrant communities, but with all the usual problems of large American cities, including severe poverty and stark inequality.

LASC is a part of the Ohio State Legal Services Association (OSLSA) – a three-part legal aid program headquartered in Columbus.  OSLSA includes Southeastern Ohio Legal Services which serves 30 counties, and the Ohio Poverty Law Center which provides legislative and administrative advocacy on behalf of low-income individuals.   The mission of OSLSA is to provide civil legal aid and advocacy to combat unfairness and injustice and to help people rise out of poverty.  The Deputy Director of LASC reports directly to the Executive Director of OSLSA and works collaboratively with the leadership team to execute the OSLSA mission at LASC.

LASC has a budget of about $6 million and a staff of 60, with 39 attorneys.  It has its own board, very committed and involved in the work.  LASC affiliated with OSLSA in 2009 and the consolidation of the programs has gone well though there is still potential to achieve greater efficiencies and synergies.


Specific duties and responsibilities for the LASC Deputy Director will include managing the day to day operations of the Columbus office; assisting in the development and implementation of agency policy, collaborating with Southeastern Ohio Legal Services, supporting advocacy and grant efforts, working with community partners, ensuring compliance with funders, as well as other duties assigned by the Executive Director.


  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio;
  • At least 5 years’ experience in legal services or advocacy on behalf of low-income individuals;
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills;
  • Superior interpersonal skills to establish and maintain working relationships;
  • Ability to facilitate collaboration as well as ability to build and sustain productive relationships with diverse individuals, groups and organizations;
  • Demonstrated project management skills;
  • Exceptional problem solving, planning, and organizational skills.
