JOB ANNOUNCEMENT – STAFF ATTORNEY POSITIONS
OHIO STATE LEGAL SERVICES ASSOCIATION

New Philadelphia Office

Ohio State Legal Services Association (OSLSA) is looking for an individual with a demonstrated commitment to making a difference in the lives of indigent people and their communities for attorney positions in its field program, Southeastern Ohio Legal Services (SEOLS). SEOLS, serving 30 counties in southeastern and central Ohio, is one component of Ohio State Legal Services Association (OSLSA) which fights poverty and its impact through its field programs, SEOLS and The Legal Aid Society of Columbus, and its statewide advocacy program, the Ohio Poverty Law Center.  The attorney would be in SEOLS’s office in New Philadelphia and would focus two/thirds of their time holistically helping and advocating for victims of domestic violence with their remaining focused on general poverty law representation and advocacy.

 

OSLSA attorneys are encouraged and supported in being creative, effective advocates in federal, state, and local judicial, administrative, and legislative advocacy and forums. In addition to aggressive direct client representation in areas of family, housing, consumer, benefits, health, utility law and individual rights, OSLSA attorneys have:

  1. Established the right to counsel for indigents in Ohio’s juvenile custody proceedings and are pursuing the right for parents defending against involuntary adoptions.
  1. Established due process rights for indigents in their dealings with utilities, rights of tenants not to be evicted extrajudicially by landlords shutting off their utilities, women not to be denied service due to ex-spouses unpaid bills, tenants’ rights to service in their own name, etc.
  1. Organized law enforcement, judges, prosecutors, medical providers and shelters into domestic violence councils and successfully pursued federal litigation to ensure effective enforcement of Ohio’s domestic violence laws.
  1. Played a leading role in successful efforts to pass Ohio’s Domestic Violence Act and to restrict payday lenders’ abuses in Ohio.
  1. Gone to federal court to get Ohio Dept. of Medicaid to comply with federal law and due process resulting in 180,000 low income Ohioans having their medical coverage reinstated.

In addition to a salary for the SEOLS attorneys of $44,500+ DOE, excellent benefits/leave package and LRAP through our state funder, OSLSA provides excellent ongoing training including its New Attorney Training Protocol, CLE-approved one and multiple day trainings on substantive poverty law and trial advocacy skills, including preparation and presentation of a mock jury trial, programwide retreats, and encouragement/opportunities to participate in statewide task forces and advocacy efforts.

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT – MANAGING ATTORNEY- MARION

THE LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF COLUMBUS

The Legal Aid Society of Columbus (LASC) seeks an individual with a demonstrated commitment to making a difference in the lives of indigent people and their communities for a managing attorney position in our Marion office.

The managing attorney is responsible for assuring the highest quality of legal advocacy by the office through providing leadership to attorneys and paralegals, identifying and engaging in impact representation (including litigation and other advocacy), litigation planning, strategy, and community education, helping to identifying and pursue funding, and working with management to ensure compliance with all program policies, regulations, and funding requirements of the program.

Our Marion office covers four counties (Delaware, Marion, Morrow and Union).  The office currently has 3 staff attorneys, 1 paralegal and 1.5 support staff.  LASC is one part of the Ohio State Legal Services Association (OSLSA). LASC shares upper management with our sister organization, Southeastern Ohio Legal Services, and the statewide advocacy program, the Ohio Poverty Law Center. Job Qualifications

  • Licensed to practice in Ohio, eligible for admission by reciprocity, or willing to take the next available bar examination;
  • Management and leadership abilities;
  • Ability to build a team and be part of the management team;
  • Commitment to serving the indigent;
  • At least three years of relevant experience, including progressive advocacy experience;
  • Capable in and appreciative of the use of technology;
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to think and plan strategically;
  • Ability to demonstrate and promote a positive work ethic and work environment;
  • Readiness to travel throughout the office’s service area.

 Compensation

In addition to a salary of $58,000 + DOE, we offer excellent benefits, a generous leave package, eligibility for the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP), and excellent ongoing training opportunities.

The Legal Aid Society of Columbus (LASC) is looking for an individual with a demonstrated commitment to making a difference in the lives of indigent people and their communities for an attorney position in our Columbus office.  This attorney will be working exclusively on education law issues involving children and youth and will be a member of the Public Benefits team.

 

Our attorneys are encouraged and supported in being creative, effective advocates in federal, state, and local judicial, administrative, and legislative forums.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio;
  • Experience in legal services or education law (highly desired);
  • Working knowledge of education laws, trauma informed care, and restorative justice practices (highly desired);
  • Demonstrated patience, compassion, respect and commitment to serving low-income and immigrant community members required;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required;
  • Superior interpersonal skills in order to establish and maintain working relationships with parents and children/youth;
  • Ability to facilitate collaboration as well as the ability to build and sustain productive relationships with diverse individuals, groups and organizations;
  • Demonstrated project development and management skills;
  • Exceptional problem solving, planning and organizational skills.
