Kathy Hoover is a staff attorney with the Tax Team and the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic at the Legal Aid Society of Columbus (LASC). She received a B.S. in accounting from Franklin University in 1998. In 2004, she became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Kathy’s desire to become a licensed attorney came from a desire to help people. In 2013, Kathy enrolled in Capital University Law School’s evening program and graduated in January 2017 with her J.D. and earned an LLM in Taxation in May 2017. Kathy also received Capital Law’s Spirit Award in 2017 for her dedication for volunteering for public service with 808 pro bono hours volunteered.
Kathy first became involved with Legal Aid in the summer of 2015 when she had an externship with the Low Income Taxpayer Clinics run by Southeastern Ohio Legal Services (SEOLS). She then volunteered full-time in the summer of 2016 with the Housing Unit at LASC. In the fall of 2016, she continued to volunteer part-time with housing, while also helping with the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic run by LASC. After passing the bar in May 2017, Kathy worked for a small general practice firm in Mechanicsburg and was then hired on as a staff attorney for LASC in January 2018 to represent clients before entities such as the IRS, the state of Ohio, and the city of Columbus in tax disputes.
